Meet Our Democratic Candidates

Shyanne Douma, 4th Ward Council Candidate

Nadia JassShyanne Douma is the Democratic candidate for council in the 4th Ward. She is a new mom, with an eye on the future of Hawthorne.

Shyanne will be a pro-active member of the borough council, anticipating the needs of Fourth Ward residents before major problems arise. “Too often we respond after the fact,” she said. “We need to anticipate the needs of our town and prevent costly problems down the road.”

Using her skills as a clinical project manager of Abbott laboratories in Parsippany, she will closely monitor projects for Hawthorne from start to finish, making sure our quality of life is not compromised.

She opposes overdevelopment and is concerned with the environmental impact the construction of new homes in Wyckoff near the Ravine in Wyckoff will have on Hawthorne. This area borders the Fourth Ward, near the Lafayette Hills townhouse development on Lafayette Avenue Extension.

She also views overdevelopment as a financial problem, one which strains the municipal budget as well as municipal emergency services.

Shyanne is a graduate of Montclair State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in Molecular Biology/Chemistry in 2001. She is a member of the Hawthorne Democratic Unit. She and her husband, Steven, reside at 103 Utter Avenue with their daughter.
